Ohio's Addiction Epidemic Overview
Despite reductions in drug and alcohol addiction, Ohio still ranks highly in dependency issues. Of the 4,452 overdose deaths that occurred in the state in 2023, 78% were related to fentanyl and fentanyl analogs, one of the most dangerous drugs on the street. And as opioid use declines, a Health Policy Ohio report reveals alcohol use disorders and addiction to other drugs have increased.
People in the state often seek addiction treatment for cocaine, heroin, meth, hallucinogens, and marijuana. Risk factors include young age, a history of addiction among family members, prenatal exposure, poverty, exposure to violence, and a lack of economic opportunity. Regions like Adams and Meigs counties experience high levels of substance use disorders, alcohol abuse, and related violence.
Why Ohio Residents Travel to New Jersey
Patients seeking addiction treatment options may consider out-of-state rehab centers. Traveling for treatment removes you from local stressors and can provide a different perspective, conducive to the healing process. It provides an alternative to Ohio addiction recovery centers in your region.
New Jersey is an optimal destination, about 350 miles from the closest point in Ohio, a 5-6 hour car trip, and less than 2 hours by plane. It’s far enough to provide distance for reflection, but not too far to travel.
Our state also has various benefits that are ideal for clients in a drug and alcohol rehab program. Insurance protections allow patients to attend an addiction treatment center for at least 28 days without a prior review. Our criminal justice diversion programs favor SUD treatment over jail. We also offer high treatment standards and favor a holistic approach.
The Benefits of Out-of-State Treatment
Traveling out of state can aid with recovery in the following ways:
Triggers: Traveling for treatment means you are far from your triggers. You don’t need to deal with stress coming from your job or family members, which can reduce mental health issues. It also keeps you away from the ‘old crowd’ who may be tempting you to drink and use drugs.
Anonymity: When you attend outpatient programs out of state, you don’t have to worry about running into people you know inside or just outside the facility. It ensures discreet, anonymous care.
Different Perspective: A different setting can change your perspective, creating an environment that’s conducive to addiction recovery.
