Connecticut's Addiction Landscape
The drug problem in Connecticut has reached epidemic levels. The state reported 990 overdose deaths in 2024, meaning far too many lives were taken. Although fatality statistics have dropped due to the distribution of Naloxone, drug addiction persists, leading to violence, broken relationships, and other negative outcomes.
The highest drug rates exist in New Haven, Waterbury, and Bristol, cities in the South Central and Naugatuck Valley. Risk factors include poverty, homelessness, and unemployment.
Cross-Border Treatment Benefits
While some seek addiction treatment programs near home, there are benefits related to traveling for care. Here are some to consider.
Removal from Stressors: Traveling provides distance from stressors, such as those related to work, school, and relationships, that may drive an individual to use drugs.
Distance from Temptation: Staying near home means seeing the ‘old crowd’ or encountering bars and places where you once used drugs, tempting you to fall back on old habits. Cross-border treatment removes you from temptation, increasing your odds of success.
New Perspective: Being in another state can support a new outlook and the sense of a fresh start.
Anonymity: When you travel for care, people you know are less likely to notice you’re in treatment, offering a discreet approach.
Why CT Residents Choose New Jersey
New Jersey is an excellent destination for Connecticut patients seeking substance abuse treatment due to its legislation, programs, and proximity. Here are some advantages to consider.
Legislation and Programs
Patient Protection: The state has laws prohibiting patient brokering and deceptive marketing, ensuring patients receive transparent care.
NJ Division of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS): Oversees low-cost treatment; connects via 211 or the SAMHSA helpline.
Drug and Recovery Courts: Non-violent offenders receive treatment instead of going to prison.
Proximity
Connecticut is just 55 miles from our Woodland Park, NJ facility, about a 90-minute drive under regular conditions. There are even public transportation options. The quick trip makes treatment convenient.
And if you are stressed about travel, don’t worry. We will handle all your arrangements, providing directions, metro passes, lodging assistance, door-to-door service (in some instances), and whatever else you need.
Our Clinical Excellence
Our Joint Commission-approved facility stands out as a premier intensive outpatient center for our clinical excellence. We customize our treatment programs to our clients’ lifestyles and recovery goals, ensuring optimal success. Our tailored approach makes every individual feel heard and aligns with their unique needs.
Our dual diagnosis approach also contributes to ongoing sobriety. We understand that mental health disorders are often an underlying cause of addiction. Our evidence-based therapy identifies negative thought processes that contribute to dependency issues and teaches coping strategies for healthy emotional regulation.
Full Treatment Continuum
Our outpatient treatment’s high success rates are also related to our comprehensive approach to physical and mental health services. Here’s an outline of our continuum of care:
Detox
Detox is often the most challenging part of the recovery journey, as clients often struggle with withdrawal management as their bodies adapt to functioning without drugs in their system. Our team of professionals makes detox as easy as possible, offering the following services:
Medication-Assisted Treatment: Medical detox reduces cravings and symptoms.
Monitoring: We monitor vital signs to decrease the risk of complications.
Relapse Prevention Training: Our specialists are trained to ensure relapse prevention throughout detox.
Mental Health Treatment
We understand that addiction is often tied to mental health conditions. People often self-medicate their symptoms to temporarily relieve anxiety and depression. However, this typically leads them further along their downward spiral.
Our team addresses mental health conditions at their root, with the following treatment options:
Group Therapy: These programs allow clients to gain the support of their peers, letting them know they are not alone.
Individual Therapy: Evidence-based behavioral therapies are used to help clients develop coping mechanisms and emotional regulation. Three-hour sessions are available.
Aftercare
We continue treating and supporting patients after they complete our program with aftercare strategies, such as:
Ongoing Therapy: Patients often continue attending therapy sessions on a flexible schedule to ensure ongoing sobriety.
Sober Living: We recommend sober living facilities that help clients develop skills and adjust to everyday life.
Healthy Habits: Our team encourages clients to adopt healthy habits that support long-term recovery and keep their minds off drug use, such as art therapy, mindfulness exercises, and a healthy diet and exercise regimen.
Family Program Access
Family therapy is also often included in our treatment programs. We recommend families attend sessions so they can:
Better understand addiction and their loved one’s unique needs
Identify and address issues like enabling and codependency
Ensure they provide a supportive home environment conducive to healing
CT Insurance Accepted
You may be concerned about the cost of treatment, especially if you don’t have health insurance coverage in Connecticut. However, options are available for individuals struggling with addiction.
For example, major insurance providers such as Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, ConnectiCare, and BCBS (Anthem) offer in-network coverage across state lines. Additionally, the Federal Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act mandates equivalent coverage for SUD treatment regardless of state.
