Sober Living Houses
Sober living homes are sanctuaries that provide ongoing support and structure for people who have completed an inpatient or outpatient drug treatment program but aren’t yet ready to move back into the general community.
Sober living is a transitional living arrangement that helps you work toward living on your own again. Most people work and/or attend school full- or part-time while in sober living—and this is typically a good thing. Taking on a manageable amount of responsibility while in sober living is an important part of your transition.
Benefits of Sober Living
Sober living can benefit anyone who has completed a drug or alcohol treatment program, but it can be especially helpful (if not necessary) for people who:
- Have a co-occurring mental health issue, such as major depression or anxiety
- Have been through a rehab program before
- Don’t have a strong support system of family and friends
- Have existing legal, career, or relationship problems related to substance abuse
- Are resistant to treatment and, therefore, are at higher risk for relapse
How long should you stay in sober living? It depends, but an average effective stay can range from anywhere between 30 to 90 days. The atmosphere of a cooperative sober living residence is important and can have a big impact on long term results.
