Paying for Rehab with Insurance

Thanks to the Affordable Care Act (ACA), all major insurance companies must provide drug or alcohol rehab insurance coverage to their customers. Further, you cannot be denied insurance coverage due to a substance use disorder. Uninsured people can enroll in a plan before starting treatment.

However, not everyone has the same level of rehab insurance coverage. Paying for rehab with insurance isn’t complex or complicated, but there are a couple of steps that will help you make sure you’re getting the treatment and coverage you need:

  • Call the number on the back of your insurance card – This will put you in direct contact with your insurance provider, who can explain your rehab insurance coverage.
  • Contact BlueCrest Recovery – The insurance experts on our team have extensive experience with multiple insurance providers. They will let you know whether your insurance is accepted and what costs you can expect.

Some insurance plans restrict the type or amount of treatment you can receive. For example, an insurance company may limit outpatient treatment to 30 days. In that case, attending treatment at an outpatient center for longer would not be covered by your provider, and you would have to pay out of pocket.

Checking the limitations of your plan before starting treatment can ensure you don’t get stuck with the bill, taking a tremendous weight off of your shoulders in this challenging time.

What Treatments Insurance Will Cover

Insurance companies carefully outline the types of treatments they will pay for. Some plans offer more extensive coverage, and navigating complex lists of copays and deductibles can be confusing.

But in general, these companies require that covered treatment is evidence-based, produces accurate results, and will help their customers achieve recovery.

Insurers will typically provide coverage for different levels of care, including the following types of programs:

  • Medical detox
  • Partial hospitalization programs
  • Intensive outpatient programs
  • Outpatient programs

Since these addiction treatment approaches have decades of research proving their effectiveness in helping people overcome substance use challenges, insurance typically covers them.

Similarly, specific treatments may or may not be covered by insurance. Most insurance companies will cover therapies such as:

  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy
  • Dialectical behavior therapy
  • Medication-assisted treatment
  • Motivational enhancement therapy

Since these therapies are often the best way to help people overcome a substance use disorder, they comprise the core of BlueCrest Recovery’s comprehensive treatment program.
